The Fixx & Ultravox : any relations ?

Recently on another fan board (ultravox) I had a discussion about the influence of Ultravox on the Fixx. For the ultravox lovers who know the Fixx, there's is a strong influence from Ultravox (although the Fixx is not an ultravox clone of course). Any comment ?

Probably explains why I'm a huge fan of both. I've recently with the help of cdconnection updated my collections fro many of their albums that never got release down here in NZ. My biggest dream would be to see both these in concert.

I seem to remeber an interview in like 1984 with the band where they asked Rupert who he liked, and his first mention was Billy Currie of Ultravox. Interesting...

Hey, 'spacef', fancy seeing you in here!
'fixxdownunder'... good to see another Kiwi in here!

I actually generated that entry on the Ultravox forum regarding The Fixx... I always thought the instrumental section of 'Red Skies' was very Ultravox. Interesting to note that Rupert has specifically commented about Billy, though.

'fixxdownunder', just to let you know, I have all of The Fixx CDs, and all of the Ultravox remastered CDs... can you believe that I actually found the remaster of 'Rage In Eden' in a shop down here in Dunedin...

I'm first and foremost an Ultravox fan, but The Fixx have always been very special... there's a certian emotional warmth to the songs, I think... and I love Jamie's guitar, and Rupert's distinctive little synth licks and sounds... too much to talk about really...

    Cheers guys...

Hey Rodney, glad to see you in here too !

What did you mean by "Interesting to note that Rupert has specifically commented about Billy, though" ....

Lately i've been listening to the Fixx's song that i loved most "REd Skies", "Stand or Fall" (my best) , and "outside" (the guitar solo that influenced me the most), and many more.

Too much to talk about yes, but i'll hang around here often i think.

    See you later !

'spacef'... my comment about Rupert and Billy was with regard to Sunburn's comment above...

How many of the CDs have you actually got?

Personally, after all their years of recording, I actually thought they were at their all time best on the 'Happy Landings' 5-track EP from 1997... just perfect. However, old favourites are 'Stand Or Fall', 'Red Skies', 'Outside', 'Woman On A Train', the list goes on and on...

Nice to see we've got a common interest in both bands... well, enough to write into the forums, anyway!

What the hell has happened to 'Want That Life'?

    Best regards,

    Rod.

The only CD of the FIxx I've got is Ink, a rather good LP. I have old vynils (shuttered rooms and reach the beach) + picture singles of Red Skies and Stand or Fall ,i dicovered and bought in a small shop in Wallington, England, at the same time as many other singles (most ultravox 45 rpm) + a cassette of Walkabout bought in the US, in 1986 (or 84/85? i don't remember). Here in France it's quite hard to find information stuff from The Fixx. Especially i thought the band was over after "Walkabout", and did nothing until "Ink".... that's what i thought before coming here. I'd love to find the 2/3 first LP on CDs...
Well, i must take care of my own music theses days... see you later !

    Hi Steve,

thanks for the release date... man, it's taken a while for this to come out, hasn't it? It's a bit like 'Happy Landings'/'Elemental'... now 'Hollywood Ending'/'Want That Life'...

It's a pity that a band of such longevity and great musical talent, has such trouble getting its recordings released... especially when you compare the crap that's in the 'mainstream' these days. It's a pity they still have to rely upon label support and distribution... has there been any discussion about website sales?

    Cheers...

    Hi There Rodney

Wow another Ultravox/Fixx fan NZ i'm impressed and please i'm not the only one especially with regard to the Fixx.. No one i speak to knows anything about them..I think I love both these bands equally.

I Currently have all the Ultravox albums on LP, but through cdconnection.com I plan to get the remastered cds. I'm just about there with the Fixx, managed to get the Walkabout CD last week through ebay arrived on my desk this morning so i'm busy listening while i type this.

Have you got Ultravox Igenuity Interested in your opinion on this one?

Anything after Lament or U-vox Lps is not really Ultravox to me , but attempts from Billy Curie to continue with the Ultravox style (Rod will correct me if I'm wrong).
If i remember well, "Ingenuity" is the first album of the 3rd incarnation of Ultravox, around Billy Curie, and for someone who is expecting the energy of the other periods (ie John Foxx or Midge Ure period) it may be disappointing. I bought it but didn't find it very interesting, except may be for the title song itself (now it's the cd itself that i don't find, it must be somewhere, i'm sure).
If you don't have them, get the "Rare" volume 1 & 2, which contain the B sides and rare stuff of the Midge Ure period(Ultravox is a band that i worshipped for its B sides :-) John Foxx's "Metamatic" and "The Garden" are also monuments of electronic music.
Midge Ure "Answers to Nothing" is for me his best solo album so far, but as I didn't listened to it for a while, i don't know if it aged well (it should have but it had that synth sounds... uuuh). I don't know his recent stuff, i dropped that since the "Pure" album .... too clean for me.
What i'm waiting for is a cd release of Visage "The Anvil" which contains fantastic songs, and "Fade To Grey" of course, but i'm not sure we'll see this soon.
Recently I bought all Billy Curie's solo LP at once, there are good stuff here and here, but it's quite "intimist" but it didn't turn me an absolute fan. May be that's because i followed electronic music closely and I'm used to more "advanced" stuff (house, techno, trance etc, where you find the best and the worst, but there are great stuff....).
But may be you will love Ingenuity, I can't really tell....
A good choice would be to go to the forums on http://www.ultravox.org.uk/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi where you can have "specialists" advices :-) there's also a cover section in the Off Topic forums...
    see you
