    Peace on Earth Song

Is there an expanded version of this Fixx holiday message tune? I think it would make a great single... I can't seem to get the melody out of my head.

Nice work. Looking forward to listening to the new cd.

A fan since the early 80s.

    Joe,
That song is normally titled "Do what you can" and was found as a hidden extra song on the Walkabout CD, although it doesn't appear on all issued versions of Walkabout. If the last track is over 10 minutes long, that song is on it and you fast forward beyond the end of the listed last song (Camphor) to find it.

Or, try going to sight n'sound's website for the download of the song:

    http://www.sightnsound.org/
Scroll down to the Walkabout area and you'll see it.

There is a 4:32 version of Do What You Can on the CD Missing Links that is quite good too....and the CD is pretty much always for sale on eBay and has quite a few other tracks that are worth owning....

Why is there so much space between "Camphor" and "Do What You Can"? Why not just make another track on the cd instead. I don't see the meaning in that at all.

I've been trying to find the lyrics to this song as I add lyrics to all the songs I load on my MP3 player.
I couldn't find them so I sat down and wrote out the lyrics while listerning to the song.
I've got to say the lyrics are mighty powerful.

Anyway I am stuck on a couple of lines, maybe someone with a younger/better ear than mine might be able to help finish them.

    Lyrics below
Questionable lines are marked in red.

    Do What You Can.

    There is only
    One chance for us all
    We must surely
    Make sense of it all
Try to bring peace on earth
    Not to bury your enemy
Try to bring peace on earth
    ? with anything
Try to bring peace on earth
    For peace of mind
    There is only
    One plan for us all
    We must surely
    Stand to the call
    No peace on earth
And the blame lies at our feet
There’s no peace on earth, no virtue, see only pride
    Oh do what you can
    When you see wrong
    Try to mend it
    A little is a lot
Show them what it means to be human
Show them how it feels to care
    There is only
    One chance for us all
    We must surely
    Make sense of it all
    An effort for peace
    Is our birthright
    An effort for peace
    A future life
An effort for peace just to say goodbye
    Oh do what you can
    When you see wrong
    Try to mend it
    A little is a lot
Show them what it means to be human
Show them how it feels to care
    Oh do what you can
    Do it
    Not what we are
    It’s what we do
By what we do we shall be remembered
    Live by the sword
    Die by the sword
We take the worker of the world
    We’re all to blame
    We’re all the same
Invent false truths and live a lie
    You see through me
    I see through you
But underneath you’re just like me
    Peace on earth
    Not what we are
    It’s what we do
By what we do we shall be remembered
    Live by the sword
    Die by the sword
We take the worker of the world
    We must surely
    We must surely
    Make sense of it all
    We’re all to blame
    We’re all the same
Invent false truths and live a lie
    You see through me
    I see through you
But underneath you’re just like me

    Lyrics are very powerful indeed!

My guess is that the first line in question is :

    or we aren't worth anything

The 2nd one is tougher but my guess is either:

we take the word throughout the world
    or
we take the work throughout the world

    I also think it's:

Make sense of the call the second time he sings it?

Maybe Steve P. can correct us if were off base?

Also, has anyone else noted that the version on Missing Links is slightly different from the walkabout version?

On the Walkabout version, I'm hearing "When you feel wrong" and "An effort for peace just to say good night", but my hearing isn't good, so I don't know as I'd trust it I'm also hearing an "I" before "See only pride" and a "For" before "Peace on earth"?

And I vote for "work throughout the world".
Maybe on course to the best yet!

Found the lyrics on the sightnsound website

    http://www.sightnsound.org/sounds/Fixx/lyricdwyc.html

I have found that the lyrics of many Fixx songs vary a bit depending on which album it comes from.

Sinking Island and Going Overboard are a great example of that.

I don't think it was about "meaning"... it was a bit of a fashion at the time, a few bands did similar things. I think the thought process behind it was to surprise the listener with a hidden bonus song after they thought the album was over...

First time I heard it the surprise worked, it scared the bejeesus out of me.

I own the version that has this song as well....and I loved the surprise....it came out of nowhere while I wasn't paying attention to the CD player.....definitely a great song too.

A friend of mine got his copy from a pawn shop and on his version there is no bonus track. So I guess MCA must have re-pressed it quite quickly.
