Dee, you have nothing to be embarrassed about...it does no good to hold pain inside, and you let him know how you feel. Definitely get the second opinion, and don't try to decide anything until everyone's weighed in.

Deep breaths...and like Greg said, one day at a time. (((HUGS)))
Maybe on course to the best yet!

well still waiting for authorization for the injections in my back and the mri on my neck takes forever from comp. it seems ? i went to the wrist surgeon again a week ago and my left hand is worse then ever now as far as pins and needles and pain and numbness he told me the only thing he could do is a total fusion on my left wrist it is a long surgery and intense but one big downfall to it once he does it i will not be able to move my wrist or bend it at all!! i don't use it much at all now but if this is done i will never use it again it would take the pain away and i would not have to use a brace anymore but not sure i want to go thru with it? i have to go back to the doc on march 30th and let him know what i want to do?this is a tough decision gonna have to really think about this before i do it? dee

    Hi, Dee,
I have been going through the back pain ordeal for years now. I can sympathize with you. Your pain pattern sounds very familiar. I had a herniated disk at C7-T1 which caused sharp, stabbing pain between my shoulder blades that radiated from there to my shoulder down my arm and into my wrist and hand. It felt like the outside of my hand was always asleep with the pins & needles feeling. My fingers would shake if I tried to extend them and I had decreased strength in that arm. I was sent for an EMG then MRI then a myelogram then surgery to remove the disk because it was compressing the spinal cord. My hand still kinda feels like it's asleep because of permanent nerve damage but the pain is gone. I also have more herniated disks which cause me to be on constant pain medication.
The worst is in the center of my chest and they won't do surgery yet since it would require opening the side of my chest and removing my lung to reach the disk. I was advised to wait as long as I can do to the risks and micro-surgery methods are being developed all the time which would do away with the need to fully open the chest. Look up a dermatome on the internet. It is a diagram of the disks and areas of the body they affect. My pattern matched perfectly. Hope they can fix you up. Pain sucks.

hi jeannie wow i am so sorry you have all these problems also and it does sound just like me that is scary but the difference is the discs? my herniated ones are the l4 and l5 and a tear in the l4 but here i am thinking the pain in my left hand and wrist is from nerve damage from the last carpal tunnel surgery i had in august? as it didn't work and the pain and tingling and pins and needles are worse then ever ? i do have the same pain in my left side of my neck going to my left shoulder and arm for weeks now i am hoping they okay the mri soon and the injections pain pillsdon't do much you are right i have been on nuerontin, darvocet, motrin 800 and some pills for muscle spasms none of them worked so i just take a darvocet at night so i can at least get a couple hours sleep i am gonna look up the dermatome on the computer too thanks for all your advice i hope you feel better soon too!! take care dee

My back is in sad shape due to hereditary back issues and years of gymnastics. I work in a teaching hospital and they use me as a guinea pig every now and then for the rehab students to study. My most comfy position is bent over backwards - almost completely in half. I have always been overly limber and now I'm paying for it. The disk spaces have been allowed to stretch so far for so long that they're all stretched out and allow the disk material to slide in and out instead of staying where it belongs.
I have 5 of 7 cervical (minus the one I had removed), 1 thoracic, and 3 lumbar disks that are bad. I take Tramadol 3x/day for the pain and I have a supply of Vicodin for a "kicker" as the doc calls it for when I need a little extra something. Luckily, it doesn't prevent me from holding down a full-time job or having fun. I just know what I have to do and not do to prevent furthur pain and injury.
    Take care,
    Jeannie

wow , jeannie is the first person ive ever heard of, besides me, that wants to bend backwards for releif ...i tell my family all the time i wish i could bend backwards ...i hang from the bed backwards best i can or upside down in the couch . i cant sleep on my back , nor my stomach , from hip to hip all night long... my spinal cord stimulator only takes care of only the pain in my legs. i remember long ago when i first hurt my back they use to hang me upside down in what was called reverse thearpy ...gravity pulling the spine the other direction. great relief , but they will not allow it now, after 5 back surgeries, plus to many years of degenertive disease. Oh, to do it all over again, never would have done the first back surgery. i can hardly walk these days , and i need a new liver too or hopefully a chance at one more treatment of interferon. been through 4 past 10 years (hepatitis C, eatin away at my liver, stage 4 )... to wake up in the morning is the best part of my day. So im glad its another day to celebrate. to those that are healthy , stay healthy its worth it.

    Thanks Dee.
Gregory, glad to have someone who understands the joy of bending over backwards.
I have found the best relief is in aqua therapy. We have a rehab center here that has a 95 degree therapy pool and I put on a life vest and ankle weights and float in the deep end. The warm water loosens up the tense muscles and the ankle weights apply gentle downward pressure kinda like traction. AHHHHHHH - traction - another of my favorite things. I need one of those inversion tables that hangs you by the ankles. I also want one of those suspended swing things kinda like a hammock for the bedroom
'cause I have the same sleep problems as you do. My house would look like some kind of S&M palace with all the "devices" I would like to install.
As it is, I start out in bed at night and then usually move to my big Lay-Z-Boy recliner that has built in heat and massage. Best piece of furniture I ever bought.
Sorry to hear about your liver problems also. If you see me at a FIXX show I'm usually drinking because alcohol is the best pain med for me. At least while I'm drinking. The morning after not so much. I'm usually in more pain from jumping around and dancing but it has always been worth it. Drinking should not be an option for you. Gotta save that liver.
    All my best,
    Jeannie

lol @divices jeannie ...inversion thats the word i was looking for ...i forgot to share, that i also had my left hip replaced ...and you reminded me of the warm pool ...that was thearpy for months ...you are so right bout the water therapy , its like magic. ...makes me want to go back. we have small spa , but it burned up, it was so nice to have, i need to see bout getting it repaired ...ive called round few places no one seems to have the component i need .... yep...my drinking days ended long ago. but its all for the good . ( 7 years & 1 month/3 days clean & sober) had few years before that too , but i struggled with few relapses over the years, they were short lived (one dayers). I dont miss the hangovers thats for sure. believe me i made my mark here over the years. vegas is very pleased that im disabled and cant drink no more, and my wife is very pleased that i behave now when attending concerts, course the only concert we attend to would be if "THE FIXX" comes to town. i can relate though bout your sleep patterns , sounds just like me. Alcohol can be a great pain reliever but it also tricks the injury only to make things worse in the long run. i hope all goes well for Dee , it is difficult to make these kind of decisions. i'll be thinking of you tonight at 1am when ive made my break to the lazy boy...LOL.

wow i really feel for you both jeannie and greggory!! i am not as bad yet but i also know i will not have any surgery either? too scary for me and i am afraid i will end up worse especially after 4 surgeries on my wrist and hand and it is worse then ever now as far as pain goes and useless to use now i am dropping things with my right hand and having pain in it because of compensating for the left hand i went to the chiropractor and talked to him about the neck and arm pain too yesterday and he said it is all connected to my disc problems in my back and it will probably not get better so i will just keep plugging along as best i can for now you two take care i wish you all the best with your back problems also as far as sleep i probably get about 2 hours a night now legs bother me alot when i try to sleep so i toss alot by friday i am dragging my butt for sure take care dee

Have you checked your local health clubs for warm therapy pools? We have one at the YMCA and the Fit Club but it's hard for me to get to those because they are booked up with water aerobics, and rehab patients until about 9 pm each night. Their only open pool time is during the day while I'm working. I'm lucky in that we have that rehab center here and they have independent pool hours. It's only $30/month and I can go 6 days a week if I want and I can go there right after work for an hour or so before they close. A big difference from the $350/hr aqua physical therapy I got after surgery.Thank God for insurance.

I'm always joking that I'm gonna invent a portable tank so I can just float 24/7. Did you ever see John Travolta in that Boy in a Bubble movie? He had to stay in a clean environment and wanted to go outside so they made a kind of fish tank on wheels for him . I just need a kind of watertight phonebooth shaped tank filled with 95 degree water to live in or at least sleep in. Pure heaven.

hi all just a quick update today i go to the wrist surgeon to discuss total wrist fusion for my left wrist! i was not going to have the surgery but as the pain and pins and needles are getting worse in my left hand and wrist and still can;t use it much i am really considering the surgery now? the final straw was when i was taking a roast out of the oven and the pain shot thru my hand and i dropped the roast on the floor!! i will let you know what happens today i also go back to the back specialist on april 7th to get my neck checked out as comp. will not approve a mri for my neck i am going thru my regular health insurance and will probably have x -rays and a mri scheduled to see why i have so much pain going from my neck down my arm! happy days !! wish me luck everyone lol i need it!! dee

Hey Dee, just checking up on you to see how you are doing! I hope everything went well with your surgery, I hate going in for all kinds of tests too, but at least I know that I'm healthy! I just went to the dentist because my wisdom teeth have been bothering the heck out of me, they said that I'm going to have to get all 4 pulled at once( ouch)! Well, at least it will be done and over with! You are in my prayers, take care!
