    Who Are These People??!!?

Has anybody else noticed the influx of new members lately? Every day it seems like we get at least a half a dozen spammers joining. What are they doing? Why are they here? Why the ramp up in recent weeks? It used to be we'd get a few a month, or so it seemed.

I have no idea why, but it bugs me to look at the list of who's on the Board and see a pile of gibberish names outnumbering familiar forum friends. Thoughts???

Yes Musegirl, I saw that too. As I noted on the "Spammer Alert Message Center" thread, they come up with these bizarre user-names and then don't post anything. Evidently they will be lurking and seeking an opportunity to make a sales pitch at some time.

Although our moderators seem to be blocking them and shutting them down as they come in.

    Yes, it's a nuisance.......

i have been a "lurker" for sometime and just joined myself....

I noticed that too.....that we seem to be getting a bunch of people from all over the world with names that I could not even begin to pronounce.... and was going to report it to a moderator.

I don't speak russian.. but when it was listed in one of these peoples occupation ....something...porno...something...

    I was like Hmmmm....

seems to be some networking here... whether good or bad.

Could be just random hits or could be odd crossovers from Myspace...

I've friends who have been harrassed by all sorts generated from there.

That's one of many reasons why I don't and won't belong to those sites.

    And unfortunately...spammers/flamers are a world-wide web reality.

Thank goodness we have cool moderators who are great at policing here.

I'd like to see "these people" removed from our calendar, they are cluttering it up with what are most likely fake-birthdates and it's making a mess.

Take a look at that calendar and you'll see what I mean.

    Sheesh.......

Are there any updates on this? I'm new here, too, so all the strange names piling in- well, I wouldn't know the difference. But, I'd like to see some pruning done to get down to real Fixx fans. Esp. if these are just spammers or some solicitation ring.

I don't know what I just said or why.

I did notifiy the moderators and pretty much got the "don't worry about it"

It really is messing up the true count of the fan base....

and it is also amazing to me how these people are all from countries where I DOUBT that they have ever heard of the Fixx .....and they all seem to be registoring on the same day or days apart and I find It FACINATING that so many people all have the same birthday but in different years....HMMMM???

yeah, a total nuisance they are; as long as the board doesn't crash, we deal with it. lots of forums have the same malaise.

The task of identifying malicious (non) users and deleting them is colossal. The board administrator is aware that the problem exists and how some users (such as Jeanne) feel about it. I can not speak for the administrator but would assume that the size of the task weighed against prior obligations might be keeping him from making the solution to this situation a priority.

As a moderator, I can remove spam or offensive posts. I can not delete users.

I thought we'd had a huge influx of new fans during the time of my absence. Trying to be optimistic.
I am the winner in any event.

They're almost as bad as the people who keep joinging the Fixx's MySpace only to post ads for their own bands (which have to be removed)...but not quite.
Maybe on course to the best yet!

I find it rather annoying as well, heimo.

I've been noticing this as well, when I was looking at the calendar I saw all of these unknown names that I've never seen before. I completely agree with you Heimo, the spammers are cluttering the board!
